Dyvika Peel: January 2021

Dyvika Peel is a sculpture and installation artist currently based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, however her concentrations also focus on screen-printing, drawing, painting, and risograph print.

Recent exhibitions include solo shows with Wood Street Galleries and Phosphor Project Space; work featured in SIX FEET and Vertigo, hosted by Associated Artists of Pittsburgh; Looking Out, an online series by Miller ICA; and A Better Home and Garden at Bunker Projects.

Upcoming and current projects include a series of digital prints inspired by online mental health quizzes, “Perfect Secrets” a risograph zine collaboration with local risograph press “Misfeed” based on Victoria’s Secret catalogs and only visible under ultraviolet light, as well as upcoming features in an exhibition at SPACE Gallery and AAP’s New Member Exhibition.

Most of my work is rooted in nostalgia and the senses. Nostalgia being this burden of painful and romantic memories that is always evolving and bleeding together. That type of discomfort is unique to me, because the senses become almost unreliable. On the other hand, living with an autistic brain allows me to be hyper-affected by sensory stimuli, especially color and light, so they tend to leave a lasting impression and become a part of me in a way. These factors coalesce into what I call “the soup” of my brain, and magically dream themselves into little soap operas that I put into the world. I like to think of it as a magical process in a general sense, or at least a romantic one.
