Beacon Communities (“Beacon”) is accepting proposals for a community art installation at its upcoming project, The Standard on Fifth. Beacon is a full-service multifamily residential development and property management company with offices in Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. Beacon has a robust portfolio of affordable housing and mixed-income housing across the region, with a well-established history in Pittsburgh.
Beacon’s project in Pittsburgh, The Standard on Fifth, will bring 51 mixed-income units to the Uptown neighborhood of Pittsburgh, in partnership with the non-profit organization Uptown Partners of Pittsburgh (“UPP”). In an effort to engage the Pittsburgh community and honor the history of the Uptown neighborhood, Beacon is in search of an artist or artists to collaborate and execute on designs for permanent, community-relevant art at the property.

Deadline: June 1, 2025
Eligibility: Open to artist or artist team with demonstrated experience in designing, creating, and installing site-responsive community art.

• Reflect the community’s history, culture, and values
• Support local or regional artists
Themes:
• Ethnic Diversity and Immigration – Uptown Pittsburgh has been home to various immigrant communities over the years, including African American, Irish, Italian, and Eastern European populations. Each community has contributed to the cultural tapestry of the area.
• Industrial Heritage – Uptown Pittsburgh has deep roots in Pittsburgh’s industrial boom, particularly with its proximity to steel mills and factories. This played a crucial role in Pittsburgh’s development as an industrial powerhouse.
• Urban Revitalization and Community Development – In recent decades, Uptown Pittsburgh has seen efforts to revitalize and develop the area, focusing on sustainable development, community engagement, and economic growth. This includes initiatives to improve housing, infrastructure, and public spaces.
• Social Justice and Activism – Uptown has a history of social activism, with community leaders and organizations working towards social justice, affordable housing, and improved living conditions for residents.
• Environmental Stewardship – efforts to create green spaces and promote environmental sustainability are part of Uptown’s recent history, reflecting a commitment to improving the quality of life for residents.
