Exhibition put together by The Bee Collective to raise awareness and funding for pollinator habitat. The juried exhibition consists of 15 artists in utilizing various mediums such as ceramic, wood, steel, glass and fabric, and placing them in one of The Bee Collective's hives over the summer so bees could build comb onto the pieces. Artists included in the show are from across the country. The goal of this project is to connect work from artists in this community to the honey bees in a way that truly binds our culture and nature. Creating a true physical symbol of our initial steps to merge these two cornerstones in Franklinton, Ohio. As the honeybees fill spaces, build comb, and fill the cracks to fit their needs, they are a reminder that we do this in our own lives. Opening is October 12 2-8pm, with live music 5-7:30pm

Broken Ground
In Western Pennsylvania and beyond, images of workers taming the earth were among the most powerful symbols of human achievement. Contemporary concerns over the ecological and social impacts of extractive industries, however, now cast scenes of mining, farming and steel production in a very different light. This exhibition brings together works from the UAG collection with loans from local partners and contemporary artists to reconsider these once seemingly heroic images of land and labor. 

This exhibition includes works from the UAG’s permanent collection, loans from the Senator John Heinz History Center, Rivers of Steel and the University Library System, and works by local artists Jamie Walters Kessler, Chris McGinnis, and Clayton Merrell.

Joe Magarac Returns
As legend tells it, Joe Magarac, a Slavic immigrant from Braddock, Pennsylvania, stood over seven feet tall and was literally a man of steel. This untiring goliath worker gave his life to the mills, turning out 2,000 tons of steel per day. Using William Gropper’s 1947 painting of Joe Magarac as the central focus, this exhibition explores the cultural and social dimensions of Pittsburgh’s most famous folklore hero and his resonances in the local imagination, then and now. 

This exhibition includes a new installation by artist Quaishawn Whitlock that explores the resonances between the stories of John Henry and Joe Magarac.

Presented by the University Art Gallery with generous support from Humanities Engage, the Mellon Foundation, and the Marstine Family Foundation. Special thanks to Rivers of Steel, the University Library System (ULS), and the Society to Preserve the Millvale Murals of Maxo Vanka.

Rewilding
How can we reclaim nature from industry, extractive labor, and consumer culture? Filmmaker Sarah Moore explores this question in a seven-channel video installation specially designed for the UAG. This immersive installation projects footage of rewilded golf courses from across the Eastern United States on the ceiling, walls, and screens in the historic Rotunda. Together, the video projections celebrate spaces given back to nature after centuries destroying land for industry, greed, or sport.

This installation is presented by the University Art Gallery with generous support from the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation, the Film and Media Studies Program, the Mellon Foundation, and the Marstine Family Foundation.

​After earning a BS in Physics from Carnegie-Mellon and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Dale Huffman spent several years as part of a ragtag, over-educated crew repairing air-cooled Volkswagens in Illinois. Returning to Pittsburgh he and Betsy spent two decades as full-time artists before Dale was asked to join the faculty at Carlow University. Dale has been included in wide-ranging national and international exhibitions as well as books and leading periodicals from England, Germany, Ireland, Australia and the US. His work has taken him to Japan, Denmark, Spain, Sweden, and Taiwan. Dale is now Professor Emeritus at Carlow and enjoying the time to explore paths not taken.

Dark Mode. That ubiquitous viewing setting on our devices is not only a visual theme to reduce eye strain but is something of a daily ritual of gradual psychic decomposition. In this twilight state, cellular renewal occurs - we shed dead cells and generate new ones in an unseen yet constant coming and going of thought/matter within the body. Here, “dark” also suggests that which eludes direct observation - the work inspired by deep field images captured by the Hubble Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope.

Sanders' initial curiosity about humanity's presence in outer space has mutated over time into a contemplation of the ability to see into the endlessness of the cosmos: what does it mean to see so much? 

Tracing an Outline Around a Man's Shadow, A group exhibition featuring Atticus Adams, Aaronel deRoy Gruber, Michael Morrill, Ed Panar, and La Vispera. The Opening reception is Thursday, August 1, 6-8 pm and runs August 1 - September 13, 2024.

Tracing an Outline Around a Man’s Shadow is a group exhibition of works that explore shadows, cast light, color, and negative space. Six artists working across entirely different mediums and thematic concepts come together, playfully casting shadows, capturing darkness, and employing materials that diffuse light in unique cascades and hues. 

The exhibition’s title is in reference to the myth of the Corinthian Maid, who, in an effort to capture the likeness of her lover before he went off to war, drew an outline of his shadow on the wall behind him as he slept. The myth, recounted by numerous philosophers throughout history, is often referenced as the birth of painting, and as humanity’s primary foray into the depiction of the self. When considering the shadow’s mythical place in history to bring us out of the proverbial darkness, one discovers that is has also been associated with the soul, evil, and the self’s own doppleganger. A shadow’s many associations serve as a psychological mirror to our existential fear and wonder and is explored here by the containment and diffusion of light and darkness within the gallery setting. 

Simultaneously highlighting the psychological impacts of shadows and darkness, Tracing an Outline Around a Man’s Shadow explores materiality through the various mediums employed by each artist. In focusing on the presence of each work, how can viewers contend with the underlying nothingness that gives a shadow its unique significance? In approaching each work, viewers will find that the fleeing intangibility, which is a central element of both shadows and light, acts as a unifying force throughout the exhibition.

The Flock Artist Collective is composed of artist/mothers whose creative practices explore the wide-ranging, multifaceted, often-unseen work of parenting. Artists include Eileen Alcalde, Sandra Bacchi, Aimee Bungard, Sophia Cardillo, Naomi Chambers, Megan Lindsey, Christine Lorenz, Michele Randall, Megan Shope, Carrie Smith Libman, Masha Solus, Janet Watkins, Courtney Williams, Alisha Wormsley, Alecia Dawn Young, and Stefanie Zito.

Each artist has their own way of tracing out the lines that connect artmaking to mothering, and none of them look like simple geometry. They are lines with mass and weight, lines that meander like rivers over time, lines that blur, lines that start to fray where they are stretched near breaking. July 25th, 6-9pm is Tomayko Foundation's Summer Silent Auction, which features a number of AAP Members. The proceeds from the auction will be split evenly between the artist and the foundation. The Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Awards 2024 honorees have been announced, with fiber artist Tina Williams Brewer named Established Artist and director-writer-performer Adil Mansoor tapped as Emerging Artist.

The awards program, co-sponsored by The Heinz Endowments and The Pittsburgh Foundation, is guided by a shared belief in artistic excellence, creative development and the need for continuous career advancement.

In the tradition of the Creative Achievement Awards created by Carol Brown during her tenure as president of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust more than three decades ago, two artists are honored. One award is directed to an established artist and one to an emerging artist, and both must live and work in the southwestern Pennsylvania region. Each of this year’s awardees receives $50,000 in unrestricted funding.

Stu Chandler has been fortunate to travel the world, always with a camera in one hand, usually a cup of coffee in the other. In 2021, he closed the chapter on his career as an engineering manager for a major semiconductor manufacturer and is now free to explore the world through the eyes of an artist.

Photography is often expected to be a documentary representation of what the photographer saw.  As an artist, however, Stu seeks to create images with a sense of place, interest, moment, drama, beauty. Through the digital darkroom, he embraces the freedom to shape an image to realize the full potential of a scene, with no apologies.

Stu is a proud member of the Professional Photographers of America.

Any representational artist must contend with what it means for their art to be both real and not real, but this question gains a fraught edge for those artists who draw less from their observations—how the real world actually affects them—and more from their desires—how they want the real world to affect them instead. In My Subject, Paul Peng insists that his desires already exist in the real world: as real drawings and real pictures, brought about by his singularly intensive approach to improvising and rendering scenes from simple pencil and paper. Described by the artist as “drawings of monster boys in situations” and contextualized through the folk art of furry subcultures and cartoon fandoms, the works in this exhibition aim to honor their picturehood as the real look that happens when something looks at something else, even when those somethings themselves do not exist in the real world.

The Irma Freeman Center for Imagination presents Beyond The Brush, opening Friday, June7, 7 - 10 pm. This show features the work of 4 artists. Christopher Boring*, Vania Evangelique, Heather Heitzenrater*, and Lewis V. Pell.

The artists in this show have come together, each with their own distinct techniques, to explore the depths of painting within a naturalistic theme-and what it could mean to go ‘Beyond the Brush’. A diverse collection of paintings, ranging from surreal abstracts to landscapes and impressionistic pieces. Congratulations to the winners of the Tomayko Foundation’s 2024 Performing Arts Sponsorship: Artists Heidi Wiren Kebe, Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh, and Veronica Santiago Moniello!

Kebe, Hsieh, and Moniello present HORSES & FOXES, a 40-minute durational immersive performance with dance, sound, and sculpture performed live by the three artists, three women. This project is a synthesis of choreography and sound composition in which all elements are in constant conversation with one another; the materials used are strong yet elastic: steel, wood, glass, and ice. Depicting the shapeshifting quality of these creatures in folklore and the malleability of women kind. Built on the histories and mythologies of its namesake, HORSES & FOXES will take over Studio A at Pittsburgh’s WQED (The Fred Rogers Studio) and will feature Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh, Veronica Santiago Moniello, and Heidi Wiren Kebe.

The performance will premier in February 2025.

For the 10th edition of NADA New York, CUE Art presents a new sculpture by Ling-lin Ku following her 2023 solo exhibition, Insight Outsight. Ku was an awardee of CUE’s 2023 open call, through which she received mentorship from Agnieszka Kurant.

The work on view at NADA, Invisiphilia (2024), builds upon the artist’s ongoing interest in the relationships between natural, built, and digital environments, examining these systems through the lens of insect behavior. In Ku’s practice, she generates worlds that leap between macro and micro scales, questioning familiar dichotomies between animal and human, ecology and technology, and the metaphorical and physical.

Invisiphilia is a digitally fabricated sculpture that playfully interrogates the disorienting experience of navigating digital spaces. A swarm of pill-shaped bugs engraved with 404 (the error code for a webpage that cannot be found) sits atop and within a bright pink melting puddle, navigating toward a central vortex. The layers of the structure become a stand-in for imaginary webpages and simultaneously resemble flora found in nature.

Presented on the rooftop of 548 West as part of NADA’s Sculpture Projects, Ku's work leverages this space of gathering to ask us to consider new environments and pose key questions: Where do we find ourselves in our search between desires and answers? In what ways do we render ourselves visible and invisible in these new digital landscapes?

Saturday, May 4th 6-8pm is the opening reception of Two Open Mouths: A Solo Exhibition by Karen Lue. In celebration of AAPI Heritage Month, the opening will include performances by Sara Tang, Brent Nakamoto, Elina Zhang, Trē Seguritan Abalos, and Iris Kang starting at 6:45PM. The exhibition will be on view through Saturday, June 1st.

Rainbow Serpent, a Black LGBTQ arts collective founded and led by Dr. Marques Redd and AAP Member Mikael Owunna, is ecstatic to showcase Myth-Science of the Gatekeepers, a collection of 16 life-size glass statues of Black queer Kemetic (ancient Egyptian) deities. Providing a modern take on Kemetic granodiorite statues, the busts were made through a lost wax casting process and affixed with headpieces fabricated with glassblowing and hot sculpting techniques.

This project is a revival and expansion of the traditions of gatekeepers, an ancient African lineage of queer spirit workers, artisans, and diviners, and it presents to the world a new Afro-diasporic spiritual system. The statues and the spiritual system that animates them are deeply woven into the collective’s larger explorations of African cosmologies, multimedia art, innovative healing protocols, and emerging technologies. Please mark your calendars now for what promises to be an endarkening and life-giving event.

Clay Pittsburgh is pleased to announce the first of its series of tours of Allegheny County pottery studios. Encompassing nearly 20 sites throughout Pittsburgh and surrounding areas, the tour provides the opportunity to view and purchase work from over 50 ceramic artists. This celebration of the ceramic arts will take place on the weekend of April 27 and 28 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. While each location will differ somewhat in what they offer, there will be opportunities to talk to the potters about their work at each studio and demonstrations are planned at a couple of venues. A map of all studios is available from the Clay Pittsburgh web site (claypittsburgh.org). Funding for this event is provided by a generous grant of $10,000 from a local foundaton. It is anticipated that these tours will occur twice each year with a varied selection of participants.

A recently founded non-profit organization, Clay Pittsburgh’s mission is to advance the ceramic arts locally through education, exhibitions, and artist’s services. Western Pennsylvania is home to hundreds of potters and other ceramic artists. We bring these creative individuals together as a community and hope to bring the community to them.

“These abstract porcelain sculptures are about Repair and Renewal. In these works I am able to embody opposite ideas simultaneously. As the title Force/Counter-Force implies, first I try to depict the overwhelming forces that at times hit us. These can be forces from nature, like hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, the shift of tectonic plates. But they can also be from people. The sculptures first embody that acute moment when the force hits and everything seems to be Coming Apart. We feel the force might fragment us. All is in pieces. We can’t see a future…. Yet, we stand still in the middle. We pick up the pieces. We quilt them back Together. As in the sculptures, the pieces don’t always go back to their original spots. Bruises, scars, gaps remain, and yet a new whole is formed that can be quite lovely. In Repairing, we Renew. We find a way. And in so doing, we become beautiful. “

This class gives students a chance to explore a new media – mosaic art. Students will work on two projects- a 2D and a 3D mosaic, and will be ready to bring home their finished artwork at the end of the week. They will be using stained glass, little tiles, beads and different findings. They will learn about mosaic art history, learn to use mosaic tools and above all, explore their imagination. They will be closely guided by the instructor to use the materials and tools provided. The class is designed for ages 7-12; the materials used to make the mosaics are kid-friendly and safe to handle.

In this fun micromosaic jewelry class you will make one or two pieces of jewelry using stained glass, beads, milefiori, glass stringers and other findings. No experience necessary. The choices will be a pendant, bracelet, earrings or hairclip. You will learn to cut tiny pieces of glass to make them fit in the jewelry base to create original, ready-to-wear pieces of jewelry. Must be at least 18 years old to participate. Please wear close-toed shoes.

About the instructor: Sandi Timbus is a mosaic artist with 13 years experience. She has been studying mosaic with American and European masters and has been also teaching small private classes. She is a member of Pittsburgh Art Associations.

The Rauh Jewish Archives will exhibit Louise Silk: A Patchwork Life from September 2024 through April 2025. Through a retrospective lens of my work, the exhibit will consider the evolution of fiber art within the fine art world, the growth of feminism locally, and environmentalism within the craft movement, among other topics.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is my new work called The Witness Quilt made from more than 1200 individual patches, each bearing a piece of folk wisdom. “Story of the Blissfield General Store and the Pure Bliss Advertising Campaign,” a solo show by Ron Copeland Opening Reception is April 5th, from 6pm-8pm.

In the Story of the Blissfield General Store and the Pure Bliss Advertising Campaign, Ron Copeland explores his great-grandfather W.W. Moore’s history of owning the local general store in a small farming town named Blissfield. The town sprung up in the 1890s when the Pennsylvania Railroad extended a commuter and freight line through the sleepy Ohio Valley. As America shifted away from the rails and into the driver’s seat of the automobile, Blissfield was cut off from its lifeline.

Copeland imagines being hired by W.W. in the mid-1950s to create an advertising campaign to promote his spin-off product line, Pure Bliss. Together, they would develop color concepts, branding inspiration, and multiple logos for packaging designs and signage to promote products for those happy to be behind the wheel. The exhibition is a multimedia experience featuring a general store installation, hand-painted signs, sculpture, photography, antiqued elements, and created artifacts of the team’s ideations to promote the enjoyment of travel by Driving with Bliss

“Untangling Our Roots” exhibition featuring the art of Peggi Habets and Lauren Braun

In the exhibition, Peggi’s work explores the evolution from childhood beliefs and cultural influences to developing a unique path and voice as an adult. Each painting in the series addresses a different universal struggle and is infused with a solitary figure, enigmatic nature as a healing and guiding force, and/or spiritual and cultural symbolism. This series strives to embody mystery, beauty, exploration, and discovery.

Lauren's art practice consists of researching images and creating a library of collage materials in a cyclical process of drawing and painting, cutting out and arranging. This current body of work was inspired by shell shaped architectural moldings, tide pools, and Art Deco jewelry and design. Her process is a playful exploration of materials in collage, mixed media and ceramics.

Together the artists' work creates a seamless flow of nature, color, texture, and symbolism.

Exhibition runs March 7 - June 23 at Pittsburgh Botanic Garden

Lizzee Solomon was born in New York, NY and grew up in suburban Chicago, IL. She earned a BFA in Studio Art and Hispanic Studies at Carnegie Mellon University in 2011. Lizzee is based in Pittsburgh, and participates in group and solo exhibitions as an artist and curator in the region. In addition to her studio practice, Lizzee is a commercial artist, working with businesses to elevate their products and brands using a combination of new and traditional techniques. Lizzee also has over fifteen years of professional teaching experience, having taught at the Carnegie Museum of Art, TechShop, and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. She is currently an instructor and Board Member at Protohaven in Wilkinsburg.

The artistic processes of Seth Clark and Jeffrey Smith vividly showcase the diverse ways in which artists engage with materials to convey their unique visions and narratives.

Seth Clark's choice of paper or wood as mediums in his 2 and 3 dimensional artwork reflects his fascination with the fragmented and tactile nature of decay. The fragility and varied textures of these materials align with the themes of transformation and deterioration in his artwork. The layering of acrylic, charcoal, pastel, and graphite, contributes to his artwork's multidimensional quality. This layering process creates depth and definition, allowing the raw materials to evolve into complex and textured compositions. Clark seamlessly integrates the processes of sculpting and drawing, blurring the boundaries between artistic processes. This fusion enhances the expressive quality of his artwork, where the meticulous arrangement of paper or wood interacts with drawn and painted elements.

Jeffrey Smith's choice of beads, found leather, and suede skins highlights his appreciation for the traditional art of beadwork. The combination of these materials serves as a canvas for his intricate, sculptural designs. Smith's artistry lies in his ability to balance the elements of shape, texture, and color. This delicate equilibrium contributes to the aesthetic appeal of his beadwork, showcasing his mastery in manipulating these components. Smith's use of invented patterns on shimmering surfaces demonstrates his creative prowess. The beadwork becomes a form of storytelling, with each pattern contributing to a larger narrative that exemplifies the beauty and artistry inherent in his artwork. The conversation between materials, their placement, and the spaces in between create movement in Smith's artwork. This dynamic quality adds a layer of life and vibrancy, making his creations more than static objects.

Seth Clark and Jeffrey Smith exemplify how the meticulous crafting process and the fusion of mediums contribute to the richness and uniqueness of their artistic expressions. Their resulting artworks serve as a testament to the profound connections between the artist, their chosen materials, and the narratives they seek to convey.

In Buttery Spread, Honcharski and Wagner are re-thinking what a gallery can be, by presenting an exhibition that is sensory, playful, exploratory, and non-transactional. They invite visitors to spend time with a collection of whimsical, food-related artworks, and have also transformed part of the gallery into a reading room, where visitors can enjoy a collection of food-related books, zines, and magazines. Insight Outsight is a solo exhibition by Pittsburgh-based artist Ling-lin Ku, with mentorship from Agnieszka Kurant. The exhibition playfully interrogates relationships between natural, built, and digital environments through the lens of insects. Ku’s sculpture and installation works utilize digital fabrication to generate a world that leaps between macro and micro scales, questioning familiar dichotomies between animal and human, ecology and technology, and the metaphorical and the physical.
