Edward S. Eberle
Of Squirrel Hill, 78, died September 26, 2023, at Presbyterian Hospital with his family by his side. Edward (Ed) was born on October 3, 1944, the son of Helen (Wisniewski) and Charles D. Eberle of Tarentum, PA. In addition to parents, he was predeceased by sister June Higgins and brother-in- law Robert, Springdale PA, sister Marilyn Torgent (John) McKeesport PA, sister-in-law Barbara Eberle (Charles) Newark DE, sister-in-law Sally (Sara Jane) Kizakevich (Paul) Durham NC and niece Lara Marie Sobol, Monroeville PA.
Edward received a BS degree in Art Education at Edinboro State College in 1967, then served for two years in the US Army. Upon returning Ed married his college sweetheart Evalyn in 1969, and entered graduate school at the New York State College of Ceramics MFA program at Alfred University.
After graduation, the Eberle's moved to Philadelphia where Ed taught ceramics and foundations of art at the Philadelphia College of Art for four years, then relocated to Carnegie Mellon University where he was head of Ceramics at the School of Art teaching ceramics, sculpture and foundations of art, from 1975 until 1986. In 1980, Eberle had his first solo exhibit at the Carnegie Museum of Art.
In 1985 Eberle opened an art studio in Millvale and quickly achieved gallery representation in midtown New York and nationally, becoming an internationally acclaimed artist specializing in sculpture, painting, drawing and installations.
Eberle achieved notoriety from his use of terra sigillata painting on porcelain vessels and sculpture, as with a 3-dimensional canvas. A highway expansion project with Route 28 caused Eberle to relocate his art studio in 2010, renovating the Elks Lodge in Homestead, PA which is now Eberle Studios and Gallery.
Edward Eberle's prolific career spanned over 50 years, working exclusively in Pittsburgh, PA. He is celebrated as one of the region's most successful artists, having artworks showcased in numerous museums and collections worldwide.
He is survived by his wife Evalyn (nee Kizakevich); his sons Jonathan, Joseph and wife Annei, and grandson, Skyler, his brother Charles D. Eberle, sister-in law, Karen Sobol (Richard), brother-in-law Paul N. Kizakevich (Beth) and many nieces and nephews.
