Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation Grant

Grants from the Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation are awarded to organizations with tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) status, or to individuals or small organizations utilizing fiscal sponsors.

Note: Letters of Inquiry are no longer required. Please carefully review all application information and FAQ before submitting. 

The Foundation funds photography-based programs or projects related to the following:

  1. Education: Beginner or intermediate photography education classes that benefit either K-12 students or adults. Proposals for education programs related to exhibitions should be submitted in this category

  2. Professional Development: Workshops, mentorships or training sessions for photographers, fellowships, internships, artist residencies, or other photo-related professional development programs

  3. Archiving / Cataloging: Archiving, keywording, cataloging, or otherwise preserving photographic collections

  4. Community Projects: Projects that focus on documentary photography within a community, with a strong component of community collaboration

  5. Exhibitions: Solo or group shows with exhibition budgets under $50,000

  6. Other Photography Projects: Personal photography projects, awards, honoraria, or other


All applicants will need to include in their online submission:

  • IRS determination letter indicating 501(c)(3) status

  • Mission statement

  • Details on the organization and its history

  • Board of trustees with affiliations

  • Current operating budget of organization

  • Actual budget from most recently completed fiscal year

  • One sentence summarizing the project or program

  • Project description in detail

  • Project budget, well-researched and thorough 

    1. Requested Leonian funds must be clearly defined

    2. Include list of other committed and potential funders

  • Résumé of project director (1-2 pages, max)

  • Photographic images, press articles, or other representative media
